Win More Tennis Matches

In the last 30 years of teaching team tennis, I find very often this time of year team players asking for advice for breaking a losing streak in doubles league play. Very often it is a team who has played together in the past or at the very least has competed at a team level and may have been moved to a higher position.

Very often it is a team who has played together in the past or at the very least has competed at a team level and may have been moved to a higher position.

With that being said, here are some simple rules that might help get everyone on track:

  1. Know what are your strengths and what are your weaknesses on the court. If your strength is the volley don't stay back at the baseline. If your volleys are weak, focus on solid groundstrokes and play more defensively.
  2. Play to your strengths! If it's the net play that you like, move in behind your serve and also attack the net when returning the serve. Come into the net. Don't stay back!
  3. Simply keep the ball in play. This sounds easy, but when you're at the net and you have a high put away shot, quite often we over hit it. Remember you don't get an extra point for hitting the ball extremely hard… it's still only worth one point!
  4. Practice with a purpose!!! There's an old saying in sports "failure to prepare is preparing to fail." Practicing with intensity will get you more confidence going forward into your match. There are no excuses — you get what you put into it!
  5. Trust your skills - be patient and execute the shot, one point at a time.
  6. Trust your partner - don't "try harder" by jumping on balls that really are not attack-able. Let your partner do their job too.
  7. Stay light on your feet - expect every ball will come to you.
  8. Don't focus on trying to win a match !!! Just play every point hard! Think only about winning the next point. Tennis is about winning the next point. Don't try to win a match and worry about how many games you need to win the match. Just play one point at a time.
  9. Lastly .... Have fun !!!  it could be worse….. you could be playing golf !
